As an artist I am always searching for ways to make a closer connection to the landscape I am aiming to evoke. For some time I have been making my own brushes from things I have foraged on my walks. Made from found materials including driftwood, lichen covered twigs, old bits of boat, beach plastic, fibrous grasses and seaweed, and bound with eco-dyed silks and recycled wools: each brush has its own unique story to tell. These gestural brushes evoke memory of place, whilst their unusual materials create a freshness and spontaneity in their mark making. Recently I have discovered the ancient Japanese art of momigami in which paper is kneaded until it softens and feels like fabric.

During the talk, I will make some brushes, demonstrate their use and then create a momigami fabric piece.

The colours of my paintings compliment those of Janie Ramsay’s ceramics which are being shown alongside my work. As artists whose work is inspired by the raw beauty of the natural world, we thought the title ‘Journeys into Nature Wild’ was particularly fitting.

]]> This exhibition was originally planned to open in January at Kirkcudbright Art Gallery but due to lockdown is now showing digitally on the RSW website.

My painting ‘All That Remains’ (pictured) was inspired by the horrendous bushfires in NSW in January 2020. We were completely surrounded by fires on New Years Day. When we drove north to Sydney to return home to Scotland, we travelled for hours through scorched countryside, glimpsing people standing forlorn in the remains of the burnout homes.

I was delighted to have this work reviewed in The Scotsman by Duncan MacMillan and in The Herald by Jan Patience.

I am really delighted to have been elected as a member of The Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour (RSW) at their Annual General Assembly in Glasgow in October. Whilst I have exhibited regularly at their Annual Open Exhibitions at the RSA in Edinburgh and have won a number of prizes, it is a huge honour to have my name listed alongside such well esteemed artists.

I am excited to be exhibiting in EdFringe for a 5th time with Marion and Trevor.

This is a quote from one of last year’s reviews: Here are “three mature artists examining with calm, unhurried concentration the subtle interplay of form, void, tone, line, pattern, and texture … and it’s fascinating.”

Exhibition visitors said it was “refreshing and inspiring”, “visually mesmerising” and “another wonderful exhibition”.
Along with framed works on paper there will be handmade artists’ books and prints from the print browser.

I will be demonstrating my handmade brushes on Saturday 18th August, 2.30-6.00, Sunday 19th August, 11.00-2.30 and Saturday 25th August between 2.30 and 6.00 pm.

The experience of making your own brushes is quite unique.  Using found materials such as driftwood, beach plastic, preloved clothes, fibrous material like flax and Cordalyne, you will construct an individual set of brushes which will give you the freedom to explore drawing in a new and fresh way.
